How to Plan a Great Migration Safari

How to Plan a Great Migration Safari

A Guide to Witnessing the Great Migration

The Serengeti is home to one of nature’s greatest spectacles–the Great Migration. This awe-inspiring movement of over two million wildebeest, zebras, and antelope is a journey of survival, shaped by ancient corridors and the rhythms of the land. From the dramatic crossings of crocodile-filled rivers to the tender moments of calving season, every stage of the migration offers a unique and breathtaking safari experience.

Planning the perfect migration safari requires careful consideration of timing, location, and logistics. If you’re dreaming of experiencing this breathtaking natural event, here’s everything you need to know about planning the perfect migration safari.

1.  You can still see the migration outside of peak season

The Great Migration is often associated with the dramatic Mara River crossings from July to September. But what many don’t realise is that the migration is a year-round phenomenon, the vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, and antelope are constantly on the move across the Serengeti ecosystem, following seasonal rains. Whether it’s the calving season in the south or the rutting season in the west, every month offers incredible wildlife spectacles.

2. Choose the right time of the year

The Great Migration is a continuous cycle, with different highlights throughout the year:

  • January – March: Calving Season (Southern Serengeti). Thousands of wildebeest calves are born daily, attracting predators like lions and cheetahs.
  • April – May: Green Season (Central Serengeti). Lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and excellent predator sightings.
  • June: Rutting Season (Western Serengeti). The herds gather for dramatic mating battles before heading north.
  • July – August :(Sometimes into Oct/Nov depending on the weather patterns) River Crossing Season (Northern Serengeti & Maasai Mara). Witness the dramatic crossings of the Mara River, where crocodiles lie in wait.
  • September – November: Return Migration (Western & Central Serengeti). The herds move south, providing incredible game viewing with fewer crowds.
  • December: Herds arrive in Southern Serengeti preparing for the next calving season.

Key tip: Plan in advance!

If you want to witness the Mara River crossings (July – September), book at least 8-12 months in advance. Camps in the northern Serengeti fill up quickly, and last-minute availability is rare.

3. Select the right locations

To make the most of your migration safari, consider staying in two different locations.

Northern Serengeti: Aurari Camp

Stay near the migration herds at Aurari Camp, which is perfectly positioned to witness the sheer scale of the migration.

Central-Western Serengeti: Cherero Camp

Balance the experience with a quieter retreat at Cherero Camp, where you can enjoy intimate wildlife encounters, resident predators, and the untouched beauty of the Serengeti without the crowds.

Key tip:

The Western Corridor is also used for the return home to Central Serengeti (contrary to popular literature.) This is why Cherero Camp gets a second “migration” between September and December!

4. What about mobile migration camps?

While some travellers are drawn to the allure of a “mobile migration camp” that moves with the herds, there are lodges and semi-permanent camps in prime locations throughout the Serengeti that often provide far better value, more flexibility, superior amenities, and greater comfort.

When it comes to following the movement of the Great Migration, safari vehicles offer greater mobility and flexibility, granting you unrivalled access to the herds, even in remote areas where there are no lodging options available. This is something mobile camps simply cannot achieve as they are restricted to designated campsites.

For eco-conscious travellers, mobile camps often require frequent land clearing and increased vehicle traffic, producing an increased footprint during the relocation phases of setting up, causing more destruction to the environment, whilst semi-permanent camps are an excellent option as they are designed to leave no trace once removed, ensuring minimal impact on the environment.

Staying at two strategically located camps during your trip is not only more convenient but also ensures a seamless experience. A good travel consultant can help you choose the best location based on the season.

5. Where to see the river crossings?

Sand River, Northern Serengeti, Tanzania
Close to Aurari Camp lies the Sand River – a serene and lesser-visited gem of the Northern Serengeti. This waterway serves as a tributary to the majestic Mara River. Its tranquil beauty and quieter atmosphere make it a haven for those seeking a more intimate safari experience.

Grumeti River, Western Serengeti, Tanzania
Nestled near Cherero Camp, the Grumeti River often plays a quiet second to its famous sister, the Mara River. But don’t underestimate its charm – this river is equally breathtaking, offering an abundance of wildlife year-round. From May to July, the first wave of the Great Migration passes through, with a second round of activity between September and December. The Grumeti’s rich ecosystem and river crossings promise unforgettable moments for nature enthusiasts.

Mara River, Maasai Mara, Kenya and Northern Serengeti, Tanzania

The iconic Mara River in the Maasai Mara is renowned for its dramatic wildebeest crossings during the Great Migration. However, its fame comes with a price – the area is more densely populated with camps and lodges compared to the Serengeti. This often results in busier crossings. For a more exclusive and immersive experience, Tanzania’s Serengeti is the ideal choice.
