From the very beginning, we’ve championed values that honour sustainability, community empowerment, and a more mindful way of experiencing the Serengeti.

Conservation
Camp Design
- Harmony with nature: Our tents are made from wood and canvas, with four roof layers for heat control, cross-ventilation, high ceilings, verandahs, and no air-conditioning or fireplaces. “Leave no trace” ethos avoids permanence. No swimming pools or bathtubs.
Renewables & Efficiency
- Solar electricity and solar hot-water; low-watt LED lighting; piping design optimised to reduce wasted cold water (one solar heater per tent plus external tap to collect run-off).
Water & Waste Stewardship
- Rainwater is collected for washing. Trucked fresh water is metered in 5,000 / 10,000L runs. Groundwater is being surveyed for future usage to minimise emissions.
- Reduced packaging waste across the supply chain (glass refills, carafes, refillable amenities, bulk spices, in-house condiments, & baked goods, zero-waste menu design).
- Glass bottles are collected and taken to Arusha’s Shanga Workshop for upcycling, which employs artisans with disabilities.
Community
Women’s Empowerment
- Rostering and travel support tailored to women’s needs; female chef mentored from kitchen hand to head of kitchen
- Role design, scheduling and mentorship that enable women to thrive.
Community‑first Hiring and Growth
- All employees are Tanzanian, keeping salaries with Tanzanian families and communities; local recruitment prioritised with on-the-job training, English classes, online courses, leadership programmes, and career pathways.
Education and Outreach
- Patron of Lemugur Primary School (commissioned an architect to sketch out the redevelopment plan for new classroom). We also support Days for Girls with reusable pads and reproductive health education in remote schools.
Alternative Livelihoods
- Employment of ex-poachers as guards to create stable income and reduce incentives to poach.
Commerce
Ownership & Governance
- Tanzanian establishment, 100% non-White ownership; family-run with husband and wife duo, 50-50 male-female leadership.
Local Value Chains
- We prioritise local farmers and small traders , reducing food miles and supporting local economy, by sourcing fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy from nearby villages and fish from Lake Victoria, favouring in-season produce and women‑led cooperatives where available.
Regenerative Practice
- Preference for using durable, biodegradable materials such as teak wood from farms that regrow their trees for furniture. Embracing banana leaves, sisals, ilala palms and other natural materials for our decors.
Staff Welfare
- Extended maternity, flexible schedules, carer’s/bereavement/extended medical leave, and medical transport support.
Culture
Tanzanian Identity and Leadership
- Decolonising hospitality in practice, with leadership grown from within and teams that reflect the cultures of the places we operate.
Authentic Cultural Exchange
- Celebrating cultural diversity across Tanzanian tribes: Curated cultural visits to Kuria community arranged in advance.
- Staff-guest conversations are encouraged and traditional Swahili songs are shared by our team at farewells.
Craft & Design
- Arusha-crafted wood furniture, Maasai Mama beadwork, and WomenCraft baskets from Ngara, empowering refugee women near the Burundi border.
Guest Learning
- Safari guides and camp hosts interpret wildlife, conservation, and regional traditions; staff are empowered to explain the camp’s regenerative choices, so guests understand our “why.”

Kantabile Afrika is a boutique, owner‑run Tanzanian safari company with intimate, low‑impact camps in the Serengeti. Our ethos is simple – host with integrity and purpose so nature, people and culture thrive together. We foster meaningful connections by creating unique, memorable experiences that become stories for both the host and the guest to share.
Women‑led Hospitality
Female leadership at the forefront, roughly 50–50 representation in the workplace, championing women working in the bush, and initiatives that support women and girls.
Business by Design
Mindful architecture and operations that do not burden the environment, from tent design and passive cooling to thoughtful sourcing and energy use.
Community‑first Tourism
Our values—no tourist pressures—guide our decisions. We hire locally, transform unskilled labour into skilled professionals, and consider amenities and practices with neighbouring communities in mind.
