What do you love most about working in the Serengeti?
“I love being around nature. Seeing animals you wouldn’t normally encounter in the city is something I never take for granted. It’s magical.”
How do you find working at Kantabile Afrika?
“It feels like a true community here, people from different cultures and tribes all living and working together. It’s like a mini village we’ve built. One of the most unique things is how everyone shares tasks, even things that wouldn’t usually be considered ‘men’s work’ in traditional settings, like cooking. We look after each other here.”
What’s your favourite animal, and why?
“The giraffe. The way it walks is so elegant. I could watch it for hours.”
What are some of the interesting things about being a hostess at Kantabile Afrika?
I’ve met so many people I’d never have met otherwise, and I’ve learned so much from hearing their stories and learning about their cultures. The role has helped me grow a lot personally and has helped with my confidence. I also love practising Spanish, which I studied at university, and even learning some German greetings from our guests.
What advice would you give to a young woman who wants to pursue a similar role?
“Work on your communication skills and practice English as often as you can. If possible, learn other languages too, it really helps you connect with people. Also, build up your confidence, especially if you’re naturally shy.”
What do you love most about working for Kantabile Afrika?
“Definitely the people. Everyone here is so lovable and approachable. When I’m away from camp, I miss my camp family. The teamwork and spirit here are unlike anything I’ve experienced before. I also appreciate the flexibility of the role because I’m not confined to just one job. I’m encouraged to be creative, try different things, and be myself. The company shares its vision with us, so I feel like I’m part of something bigger.”
What are some challenges you face in your role as a hostess?
“Every guest is different, so I’ve had to learn how to adapt my approach in line with the Kantabile ethos of providing personalised service. Some guests are shy or reserved at first, so I try to read their body language and facial expressions before approaching. Sometimes a calm greeting or even a little humour helps break the ice. I’ve found that personal connection makes all the difference as many guests warm up once they see you’re genuinely interested in making them feel welcome. And when I get to practice speaking Spanish with Spanish-speaking guests, they appreciate that you make an effort to learn their language and it’s a lovely connection point.”
