At Kantabile Afrika, our guides do more than lead game drives, they are storytellers, guardians of the land, and passionate hosts who make every safari feel personal and unforgettable. This month, we sat down with Gido, one of our incredible guides, to learn what fuels his passion for guiding and what makes a safari with him so special.
1. What do you love most about guiding?
“What I love most is the opportunity to connect people with new experiences and perspectives through nature, culture, or history. It’s deeply fulfilling to witness someone’s curiosity and appreciation grow during their journey. Guiding isn’t just a job for me, it’s a chance to inspire and create lasting memories.”
2. How did you begin guiding? What made you choose to become a guide?
“I started out volunteering with a local outdoor education program. I realised how much I enjoyed sharing my knowledge and helping people connect with nature. That led me to take formal training and begin guiding small group hikes. What began as a hobby quickly turned into a passion and career I love.”
“I’ve always loved nature, working with people, and teaching, and guiding allows me to combine all three. Helping others feel more confident outdoors in the wild and showing them something meaningful is the most rewarding part. It’s more than a job it’s a way to inspire curiosity and respect for the environment.”
3. Which animal is your favourite and why?
My favourite animal is the leopard. I admire its strength, stealth, and adaptability. It’s a solitary and elusive predator, which makes every sighting in the wild special and rewarding.
4. What does a “perfect day” of guiding look like? Describe it.
“A perfect day starts with a group full of high spirits and ready for adventure. The weather is kind, the scenery is stunning, and every challenge on the trail brings laughter and connection. By sunset, we’re tired but smiling, bonded by the shared stories and the thrill of the journey.”.
5. Most memorable moment in your career?
“There was a moment when a leopard suddenly sprang into action and caught a hare just meters away from our vehicle. The raw power and speed of the hunt, happening right before our eyes, made it an unforgettable wild experience!”

6. What are your top 3 tips for a client to make the most out of their safari here?
“One: Stay curious and observant: The best wildlife moments come from patience and full engagement. Two: Listen to your guide: Their expertise reveals hidden gems and unique stories. Three: Respect the environment: Maintain distance, minimise noise, and follow park rules to protect wildlife.”
7. What makes Kantabile Afrika stand out?
“Kantabile Afrika offers authentic, respectful experiences that connect guests with local culture and communities. Their focus on sustainability and meaningful storytelling makes each trip unique and impactful.”
8. How is it different to be a Kantabile Afrika guide?
“It’s more than leading tours. It’s about sculptural exchange, educating visitors, and responsible tourism. It’s rewarding to create genuine connections and help people experience Africa authentically.”
9. How do you plan multi-day bush itineraries?
“First, I get to know the clients, their interests, pace, and fitness levels. I design each day with a balance of activity and rest, always prioritising safety and flexibility. The goal is to create an experience that’s engaging, smooth, safe and memorable.”
10. As a guide, you meet a variety of people. What’s your approach to engaging different types of guests?
“I read the group quickly to understand their energy and interests. I keep it interactive through storytelling, facts, humour and encouraging questions. I like to keep things flexible based on the group’s mood and needs. It’s all about making everyone feel included, connected and excited to explore.”
