Words cannot describe the richness of the magnificent landscape and its animal inhabitants found at Musabi Plains, a largely undiscovered gem located in a secluded area west of Central Serengeti. The allure of Cherero Camp is truly felt when the marveller has acclimatized to the sounds and rhythms of this surreal terranova that one thought only existed in imaginations.
Cherero Camp is the culmination of dreams. It is the place where magic begins. You meet extraordinary people you could not invent, experience scenes you could not preconceive. You leave awestruck, then transformed. Those moments that make you go “Wow!” leave lasting imprints that will stay with you forever.
Cherero, the Swahili word for lovebirds, is named after Fischer’s lovebirds that are native to north-central Tanzania. These little brightly-coloured birds are bold, inquisitive, curious but also fiercely loyal as they mate for life. They embody the spirit of the visionary couple who brought the camp to life from their early sketches drawn up years before the establishment of the camp.
Cherero Camp is not only for birders or honeymooners, it is a retreat for solo travellers, couples of all ages and families with children. As the first Regenerative Hotel™ member in East Africa, Cherero Camp deeply honours its sense of place. Its sense of stewardship is manifested in its pride and responsibility of caring for the wellbeing of the land and the community surrounding it to ensure that the vast wilderness is revered.
Superb game viewing with no others around—that is only the beginning of your stay with us. Cherero Camp was conceptualized out of an aching call for genuine hospitality and conscious design, based on the belief that safari-goers can immerse themselves in nature without compromising comfort. It is the nest you did not know you needed for your restorative vacation.

With only 6 spacious suites on decked platforms, Cherero Camp provides an exclusive tented camping experience like no other. In each of the intimate guest suites, you will find beautiful amenities placed in well-designed areas, with universal power outlets concealed in handy places throughout the room.
Built upon regenerative principles since conceptualization, Cherero Camp does not entertain having swimming pools or water-hungry bath tubs, since the search of water is the story of the Serengeti. With over 300 days of sunlight a year, Cherero Camp is proudly powered by solar systems for its electricity and water-heating needs.
We have also chosen to do away with having unnatural noises generated by in-room mini-fridges so guests can enjoy the lulling sounds of nature. We invite you to our slow safari concept whereby our friendly staff would happily bring you freshly brewed coffee or a cold gin & tonic so you can experience the beauty, peace and serenity that feels other-worldly at Cherero Camp.
Your home away from home contains 50m² of interior living area, in addition to the private veranda outside of the canvas tent.
Our passive design features drastically reduce the room’s dependence on carbon-intensive energy production. Instead of having air conditioning or glass panels that radiate heat and contribute to the demise of migratory birds, our tented suites are equipped with ceiling fans, layered with insulation and designed with mesh windows throughout for maximum air circulation. These protective screens also serve as barriers to unwelcomed visitors so the rooms are free of dust-trapping mosquito nets in favour of the luxury essentials of space and freedom.
Ingenious engineering aside, the finer design details have not gone amiss. The tented suites are adorned with warm lighting, plush bedding, artisan furniture and handmade decorations crafted with locally sourced materials. Offering a tented camping experience with 5-star hotel comfort for discerning travellers is the focal point of our concept. In addition to serving as an accommodation for safari-goers, Cherero Camp is also a retreat space for wellness holidays.
Depending on your needs, we can furnish our suites with a king-size bed or a couple of large twin beds in the main bedroom. We can also fit an extra queen-size bed or a pair of smaller twin beds in the adjoining lounge for families travelling with young children.

Cherero Camp is an iconoclast in more ways than one.
When the visionaries behind Kantabile Afrika were given the opportunity by Tanzania National Parks to build a camp that is away from the existing establishments, they rose to the challenge. With no infrastructure in place, the masterminds were determined to create a sanctuary that would offer a unique, immersive experience, unlike safari camps found in Central Serengeti that have access to conveniences. The husband-and-wife team was able to stay true to their own values and beliefs, by challenging the status quo and operating their business in the “right” way, both in terms of the environment and social impact, by establishing a camp that does not have any permanent structures and employing local residents from nearby villages.
While most locations in the Serengeti only get to experience the Great Migration once a year, the unique location of Cherero Camp affords visitors two distinct periods during which the zebra and wildebeest herds can be seen. The migratory antelopes first pass Musabi Plains in May and June when they are on their annual move to the north, and they return from September to December after their sojourn while making their way back home to Central Serengeti. In between these periods, guests of Cherero Camp are also rewarded with spectacular wildlife sightings and views of dreamlike landscapes.
There is a season for everything. At Cherero Camp, each season brings a renew sense of joy and excitement as different wildlife graces the open fields—be it a large herd of elephants with newborns, a group of galloping giraffes going about their annual migration, or a pack of buffalos enjoying a mud bath. Musabi Plains never disappoints.
The Great Migration is a wondrous sight, as magnificent herds of animals traverse plains and forests, staying true to their ancient instinct to move for forage. July to October is the long dry season and the Great Migration moves north with the thundershowers – the driving force of the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. As the migrating herds set north in majestic masses toward the Mara River and beyond, the lucky ones are awarded with food on the other side while the unfortunate few become food for hungry crocodiles waiting beneath the calm water surface.
The Serengeti offers diverse habitats, ranging from wooded forests to open plains, to a plethora of animals, roving or leaping, flying or crawling. Serengeti National Park is home to Africa’s “Big Five” – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos and buffalos. This ancient ecosystem continues to thrive and boasts the largest mass of free-ranging animals on earth on its 14,763 square kilometres. Giraffes, elands, hartebeests, topi and lesser kudu are often seen grazing in the park and lesser-known species, such as lilac breasted rollers, add a splash of colour to the endless plains of the Serengeti. This is one of the best places in the world to spot lions dozing off in a shade, leaping after a marked prey or gnawing off a share of their hunt.
The African wilderness is the ultimate setting to achieve true wellness, restoring your mind, body, and soul. There is no better time than the period when the wildebeest herds have ventured south, the rains have given a new life to the savannah, and the tourists and vehicles have come and gone. It is the season that we set new intentions and reset our journey.

Cherero Camp is located 69km from Seronera and 48km from Grumeti. Sereonera Airstrip is the most accessible airstrip all-year-round as it is the hub for all the domestic airlines. A pick-up or drop-off at Grumeti Airstrip can be arranged upon request.
Children from age 5 and above are welcome at Cherero Camp. They can be accommodated in the same suite as their parents. We can fit an extra queen-size bed or a couple of small twin beds in the adjoining lounge to make the unit a “family suite”. Kindly note that we do not have interconnecting units with separate bathrooms.
With only 6 tents, Cherero Camp is the perfect place for multi-generational families looking to book a safari camp on an exclusive use basis.
Ngorongoro Crater is about 200km away from Cherero Camp. Given the rough terrains and long driving distance between Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park, it is not feasible to have a day trip to visit Ngorongoro Crater while staying at Cherero Camp. However, guests are very welcome to plan an itinerary to include a visit to Ngorongoro Crater before or after a stay at Cherero Camp.
